Leveraging AI for Security: CMU & USTP Train Uniformed Personnel

Central Mindanao University (CMU), through its College of Information Sciences and Computing (CISC) and the University Extension Office, successfully conducted another extension engagement focusing on artificial intelligence applications in digital forensics. The training, “Leveraging AI in Digital Forensics,” was held on March 11-12, 2025, at Camp Alagar, benefiting uniformed personnel from the Philippine National Police (PNP) Region X.

This initiative is part of the ongoing Research, Development, and Extension (RDE) collaboration between CMU and the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) Main – Alubijid Campus.

The training integrates two extension projects: CMU DREAMS Project spearheaded by Asst. Prof. Nathalie Joy G. Casildo of CISC-CMU, and Leveraging Artificial Intelligence (Deep Learning) for Digital Forensics led by Prof. May Marie P. Talandron, Ph.D., of USTP Main – Alubijid Campus.

The two-day training covered foundational and advanced topics in deep learning and blockchain integration, aimed at enhancing digital forensic capabilities. On Day 1, participants were introduced to the fundamentals of deep learning, including Introduction to Deep Learning by Prof. May Marie Talandron Felipe, Ph.D., Data Preprocessing by Assoc. Prof. Kent Levi A. Bonifacio and Mr. Neil John J. Jomaya, and Image Retrieval using Deep Learning by Asst. Prof. Nathalie Joy G. Casildo and Mr. Ronnel A. Cabarles. On Day 2, the sessions advanced into Sketch-to-Image Conversion (Generative Adversarial Networks – GANs) by Assoc. Prof. Jinky G. Marcelo and Ms. Flordeliza N. Aguirre, followed by Blockchain as an Additional Layer of Security conducted by Mr. Kervy Clyde B. Demegillo, Mr. Rhogiel V. Andoy, and Engr. Wilfred Clark Sevilla.

The training was facilitated by a team of experts, including Assoc. Prof. Gladys S. Ayunar, Ms. Jundy V. Intao, Engr. Jasper Jimentiza, Angel A. Tan, Alnur D. Mapandi, Jonathan Ian E. Catalan, and other project collaborators. [Information from CISC]
