CMU graduate student wins technical oral presentation at 10th Nat’l Research Conference

Ms. Jackelyn M. Tomatao, a graduate student pursuing a Master of Science in General Science Education at Central Mindanao University (CMU) and a Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Strand scholar, won the Technical Oral Presentation (Master’s Category) at the 10th National Research Conference in Science and Mathematics Education, held on November 21–22, 2024, at the SMX Convention Center in Clark, Pampanga.

With the theme “Synergies in STEM: Fostering Cultural Integration, Collaboration, and Innovation for Sustainable Futures,” the conference provided a platform for educators, researchers, and scholars to present their research and offered a series of insightful talks from distinguished speakers.

Ms. Tomatao presented her research titled Students’ Motivation and Academic Performance through Ethnoscience Learning Instruction and earned a top position at the national conference. “This work is a celebration of our heritage and a testament to the beauty of integrating Indigenous Knowledge into STEM education. This victory is not just mine—it belongs to all of us who believe in the importance of preserving and honoring our culture while fostering innovation and progress,” Ms. Tomatao shared.

Moreover, five graduate students from the Master’s program in General Science and Mathematics Education at CMU also had poster presentations at the national conference.

One of the highlights of the national conference was the socialization night, where two CMU DOST Strand scholars pursuing a Master of Science in Mathematics Education received special awards for their active participation in the Science Education Institute’s activities. Ms. Karen Joy Jaspe was honored with the Accessory Maven Award, while Mr. Jerson Sarucam received the Haute Couture Award.

This year’s National Research Conference in Science and Mathematics Education was organized by the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) in collaboration with the National Consortium in Graduate Science and Mathematics Education. [Mary Jane D. Bravo]
