CMU expresses support for Philippines’ hosting of 49th ASEAN Summit

Central Mindanao University (CMU), through President Dr. Rolito G. Eballe, expressed full support for the Philippines’ hosting of the 49th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, underscoring its contribution to regional integration through international academic partnerships, research collaboration, and mobility programs.

In his message of support, Dr. Eballe recognized ASEAN’s vital role in advancing regional peace, promoting unity, and fostering cooperation among member states.
“The Philippines’ hosting of this important gathering provides an opportunity to deepen regional solidarity and advance our collective vision of a more connected, inclusive, and progressive Southeast Asia,” Dr. Eballe said.
The 49th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits are scheduled for November 16–18, 2026, in Metro Manila. As ASEAN Chair for 2026, the Philippines carries the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together,” anchored on three strategic priorities: Peace and Security Anchors, Prosperity Corridors, and People Empowerment. The summit serves as a platform for leaders to address shared concerns and advance collective development.
For CMU, ASEAN cooperation is reflected in its continuing efforts to strengthen academic ties across Southeast Asia. Through the Office of International Relations (OIR), the University has established partnerships with institutions in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Cambodia, creating opportunities for academic exchange, collaborative research, faculty development, and student mobility.
Among its regional partners are Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, Universitas Warmadewa, and Universitas Airlangga in Indonesia; Chiang Mai University, Maejo University, and Kasetsart University in Thailand; and Universiti Putra Malaysia in Malaysia.
These partnerships have translated into concrete engagements. Through the Southeast Asian University Consortium for Graduate Education in Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC-SEARCA), CMU has strengthened its links with leading agricultural universities in the region. In November 2025, the University was accepted as a regular member of the consortium, expanding its access to faculty exchanges, scholarships, and joint research.
CMU has also pursued expanded collaboration with Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta through discussions on Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), joint and double-degree programs, micro-credentials, and student and faculty mobility.
Student mobility remains a key pillar of CMU’s internationalization. In 2026, two BS Agriculture students participated in the Asian International Mobility for Students (AIMS) Program at Chiang Mai University, Thailand, from June 17 to November 6, gaining academic learning, cultural immersion, and cross-border engagement.
According to Dr. Eballe, these international engagements have expanded the University’s academic and research networks, promoted knowledge sharing, and enriched the CMU community. They have likewise deepened appreciation for the diverse cultures and perspectives that make ASEAN a vibrant regional community.
“As one of the Philippine higher education institutions, CMU stands in solidarity with the country in this important regional undertaking,” he affirmed.
He reiterated the University’s commitment to international cooperation, multicultural understanding, and stronger partnerships across Southeast Asia.
The University’s support for the Philippines’ ASEAN Chairship also reflects its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. As the Philippines leads ASEAN member states and dialogue partners together, CMU reaffirms that higher education institutions play a vital role in building bridges across borders, advancing shared knowledge, and preparing globally engaged graduates.
