Central Mindanao University (CMU) achieved global recognition after winning the Sustainability Award at the International Conference of Weighing (ICW 2026), held June 8–10, 2026, in Kitakyushu International Conference Center, Japan.
Supported by the Japan Measuring Instruments Federation (JMIF), Engr. Emmie G. Reyes presented the winning poster: “Establishing a BS Metrology Program: A Strategic Initiative for Strengthening the Philippine National Quality Infrastructure.”
While frequently confused with meteorology, metrology is the science of measurement. It plays a vital role in daily life by ensuring accurate commercial scales, precise manufacturing, and safe medical equipment. Currently, the Philippines does not offer a standalone degree in the field.
The award-winning CMU initiative advocates for a dedicated Bachelor of Science in Metrology to bridge this gap. By creating a steady stream of local measurement experts, the program will train job-ready graduates, upgrade national testing capabilities, lower operational costs for local laboratories, and support strict quality control across industries.
The framework emerged from collaborative discussions between CMU and the Department of Science and Technology–Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST–ITDI) as part of a proposed Memorandum of Understanding for workforce development. The initiative was co-authored by Engr. Reyes, Dr. Nuna E. Almanzor of Philippine Metrology, Standards, Testing and Quality (PhilMSTQ), Inc., and Michael Jason A. Solis, MSc, Chief Science Research Specialist of the DOST–ITDI National Metrology Laboratory.
Hosted by JMIF, ICW 2026 united experts, calibration organizations, and government representatives from over 25 countries. The high-profile event featured insights from global leaders, including UN Under-Secretary-General Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala and Nobel Laureate in Physics Dr. Takaaki Kajita.
By showcasing its vision on this premier stage, CMU has vastly enhanced its international visibility. This milestone firmly advances the University’s internationalization agenda, positioning CMU as a vanguard for metrology education and quality infrastructure development within the Philippines and the broader ASEAN region.
