February convocation focuses on ISO 9001:2015, quality awareness

Reinforcing its commitment to the continual improvement of quality management processes, Central Mindanao University (CMU) highlighted ISO 9001:2015 and strengthened quality awareness among the CMU community during its monthly convocation held on February 2, 2026, at the University Convention Center.

ISO 9001 is a globally recognized standard for quality management that assists organizations of all sizes and sectors in improving performance, meeting customer expectations, and demonstrating commitment to quality. Its requirements define the framework for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continually improving a quality management system (QMS).

Serving as the convocation’s Subject Matter Expert, Dr. Bienvenido M. Butanas Jr., Director of the Office of Quality Assurance, underscored the importance of establishing well-defined quality objectives among process owners across the University. With the ISO surveillance audit scheduled for February 19–20, 2026, he encouraged the CMU community to prepare actively for the upcoming assessment.

Dr. Butanas further explained that ISO 9001 pertains to the quality management system implemented by an organization to ensure that its products and services consistently meet customer requirements and comply with applicable statutory and regulatory standards. Emphasizing the need for institutional commitment, he stated, “It is very important that we internalize our quality policy.”

He also highlighted the significance of addressing customer feedback, reminding the community that “in ISO certification, we are always reviewing customer feedback” as an integral part of the continual improvement process.

In his closing remarks, Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Jose S. Valmorida expressed hope that the convocation would serve as an affirmation of the CMU community’s commitment to remaining a university anchored on integrity, innovation, and international competitiveness. He emphasized that it should challenge the community to reflect on how it teaches, serves, manages, and builds the future through various solutions, noting that this responsibility does not rest solely with the Office of Quality Assurance but is a shared obligation of the entire University.

CMU was awarded ISO 9001:2015 certification through an online conferment conducted by TÜV SÜD PSB Philippines in June 2021. Subsequently, following an assessment in March 2025, TÜV SÜD PSB Philippines recommended the continued maintenance of the University’s ISO 9001:2015 certification.

The monthly convocation concluded with the recognition of On-Time Scholars, employees who demonstrated outstanding contributions to the University, and top-performing colleges.
