In its commitment to continuous improvement, Central Mindanao University (CMU), through its Hazardous Materials Safety and Security Unit and in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology – Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI), hosted a three-day Laboratory Assessment and Training/Workshop on Hazardous Waste Management and Safety. The event took place at the Farmers Training Center from February 25-27, 2025.

Engr. Emmie G. Reyes, the designated head of the Hazardous Materials Safety and Security Unit, shared that the unit was established under the Office of Environmental Safety and Management, with approval granted on January 15, 2025. The unit’s primary goal is to implement an effective chemical, biological, and hazardous waste management system within the university. CMU’s hazardous materials representatives, process owners, and other relevant stakeholders participated in the workshop.
In an interview, Dr. Reyes emphasized the importance of chemical waste management in protecting the environment, creating a safer workplace, and minimizing costs. “There will be a series of activities across the university related to labeling, identifying, and properly storing and handling waste,” Dr. Reyes added.
Led by experts from DOST-ITDI, the workshop covered essential topics, including an Introduction to Waste Regulations and Philippine Environmental Laws, Laboratory Health and Safety, Hazardous Waste and Biological Hazards, Hazardous Waste Management, GHS Classification and Labelling of Chemicals, and PDEA and PNP Permit Requirements.

As part of the workshop, participants were tasked with evaluating several CMU laboratories to identify areas for improvement and provide recommendations to ensure compliance with relevant regulations. The workshop concluded with the presentation of the participants’ findings, which were discussed with the experts, followed by an engaging open forum. The DOST-ITDI team was led by Mr. Denvert C. Pangayao, Head of Waste Management, and included Mr. Bernard Jude M. Gutierez from the Environmental and Biotechnology Division, Ms. Rodelma D. Perez, Senior Science Research Specialist, Ms. Maria Christine B. Latosa, Science Research Specialist II, and Ms. Aleli R. Plete. [MJDBravo]
