Dr. Roejae Carlo A. Ang from CMU’s Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering under the College of Engineering, delivered his paper titled “Mechanization and Carbon Trade-Offs in Philippine Rice Systems: Evidence from Net Carbon Balance in Bukidnon Province” during the conference’s Food, Water, and Energy Nexus technical session.

The study compared operational emissions with estimated carbon stored in rice plants and upper soil layers across sampled farms in Bukidnon, finding that higher mechanization levels were strongly correlated with increased operational carbon emissions. Ang said the findings provide a baseline for evaluating mechanization programs based on fuel use, field efficiency, and emissions, rather than solely on machine distribution and hectares covered.

To mitigate environmental impacts, he recommended comprehensive carbon audits and life-cycle assessments for policymakers, alongside practical low-carbon strategies such as reduced-pass tillage, right-sized machinery, efficient field routing, preventive maintenance, and renewable-powered irrigation and drying systems.

The two-day conference convened global researchers and industry professionals to address sustainable farming, climate-smart practices, and food security. Highlights included talks on robotic intercropping, agroecological transitions, supply chain resilience, and interactive workshops on artificial intelligence in agriculture.

Reflecting on the experience, Dr. Ang noted that participating in the event reinforced his appreciation of the country’s progress in omics science, biotechnology, sustainable agriculture, and the circular economy. However, he emphasized that the international gathering also underscored an urgent technological gap.

“While we are still working to raise our mechanization index, other Southeast Asian countries are advancing toward autonomous machinery and AI-assisted farming support,” Dr. Ang observed.

He added that other countries in the region are moving beyond basic monitoring to help farmers manage microclimates, irrigation schedules, and market forecasts.

“My key takeaway is that we need to connect our research strengths with practical, accessible technologies that help Filipino farmers become more productive, resilient, and sustainable,” he said.

The paper, “Bridging Childcare and Academia: A Narrative Analysis of Multi-Generational Workspaces in Philippine Higher Education,” was presented under Track 6: Extension Track – Human Development, Sustainable Agriculture, Health, and Environmental Resilience during the conference held on September 23–25, 2026, at the Isabela State University–City of Ilagan Campus, Isabela.

The paper traced the development of CMU’s childcare initiative and examined the institutional, policy, financial, and operational processes that enabled its realization. 

The initiative dates back to 2019, when the University broke ground for the University Center for Gender and Development (UCGAD) Building, which included the envisioned Child Facility Center. The planned facility was intended to provide childcare support to parent-employees and students while also creating a learning laboratory for students in relevant academic programs.

Over the succeeding years, the initiative underwent policy development, resource mobilization, and institutional coordination before reaching a major milestone on February 27, 2026, when CMU officially launched its Child-Minding Facility at the UCGAD Building.

The facility provides free, temporary, and structured childcare services for qualified university employees and student-parents, helping them manage caregiving responsibilities alongside work and academic commitments.

The research paper describes how the University addressed systemic, financial, and operational constraints through cross-sectoral collaboration, sustained executive advocacy, and the integration of Gender and Development (GAD) resources. 

For Dr. Teresita H. Borres, primary author and current Chief of UCGAD, the recognition marks a significant accomplishment of the center and highlights the University’s continuing efforts to establish an inclusive campus environment.

“This paper, which is a jointly authored document of one of the major accomplishments of the University Center for Gender and Development, highlighted our newest milestone: the establishment of the University’s Childcare Facility—a dedicated space offering free services to our valued employees and student-parents,” Dr. Borres said.

She added that the initiative reinforces the University’s commitment to creating an environment that supports work-life harmony and academic success.

Borres also expressed appreciation to the University administration, led by GFPS Chairperson and CMU President Dr. Rolito G. Eballe, for supporting the initiative from its conception to implementation.

The study found that establishing an on-campus childcare facility helped address the caregiving challenges experienced by faculty, administrative personnel, and student-parents. It further positioned childcare as an institutional concern connected to employee welfare, student participation, academic productivity, and gender-responsive governance. 

Anchored on Work-Life Balance Theory and the 5R Framework for Decent Care Work, the study examined how CMU recognized caregiving responsibilities, reduced care burdens, redistributed responsibilities, and developed institutional mechanisms to support caregivers. 

Beyond providing childcare services, the facility also serves an academic function as a learning laboratory for Bachelor in Early Childhood Education students, while providing field exposure opportunities for students from other relevant programs.

The recognition reflects CMU’s continuing commitment to its mandates on gender-responsive governance, human development, education, and community-oriented institutional support, while contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 5: Gender Equality, SDG 4: Quality Education, and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. The five-day strategic workshop, held on September 21–25, 2026, in Dinagat Islands, focused on Nepenthes populations in Mt. Redondo, Dinagat Islands, and the Pantaron–Tago Ranges of Bukidnon.

The initiative was co-led by the Central Mindanao University–Center for Biodiversity Research and Extension in Mindanao (CMU-CEBREM), together with the Conservation Planning Specialist Group (CPSG) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the Carnivorous Plant Specialist Group, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Biodiversity Management Bureau (DENR-BMB), with funding support from Chester Zoo.

The workshop brought together around 40 experts and stakeholders from national government agencies, including members of the Philippine Plant Conservation Committee (PPCC) of DENR-BMB, co-chaired by Academician Dr. Edwin S. Fernando, as well as representatives from academic institutions, conservation organizations, non-government organizations, and local communities.

Participants examined key issues affecting Nepenthes and their habitats and identified solutions and strategies to strengthen both in situ and ex situ conservation.

As part of the workshop, the team visited the bonsai forests of Mt. Redondo in the Municipality of Loreto, Dinagat Islands, providing participants with a firsthand view of the diversity of Nepenthes in the province and the significant threats to the area, particularly mining.

According to Dr. Fulgent P. Coritico, Director of CMU-CEBREM, this is the first conservation action plan to be developed in the country that is specific to a particular group of plants, namely Nepenthes. Dr. Coritico emphasized the workshop’s importance and the need to conserve Nepenthes and their habitats amid growing threats to their natural environments.

In his closing remarks, Academician Dr. Victor B. Amoroso shared his vision of Mindanao becoming not only a “center for Nepenthes diversity,” but also a “center for Nepenthes research, conservation, education, propagation, and responsible utilization.” He also highlighted the aim of declaring these areas as Local Conservation Areas (LCAs) as a first step toward conservation.

As part of this vision, he aims to establish a Philippine Center for Nepenthes Research and Conservation (PCNRC) within CMU.

“Our task is not simply to document what we have, but to protect what we have. That protection requires partnership,” Dr. Amoroso said.

Over the past two decades, Dr. Amoroso and his team have discovered at least 17 species of pitcher plants across Mindanao, contributing to the recognition of the region as one of the world’s centers of Nepenthes diversity.

The workshop marks another milestone in strengthening collaboration among stakeholders to ensure that Mindanao’s Nepenthes diversity and the habitats that sustain it are protected for generations to come.

The initiative supports Sustainable Development Goal 15 (Life on Land) by promoting the conservation of terrestrial ecosystems, biodiversity, and threatened plant habitats, while advancing collaborative efforts for the sustainable management of natural resources. Six research entries from Central Mindanao University (CMU) won Best Paper Awards at the 2nd International Conference on Sustainable Solutions in Engineering, Science, Health, Education, and Technology (ICSS-ESHET 2026), held on September 23–25 at Isabela State University–Ilagan Campus.

CMU researchers secured three first-place awards, one second-place award, and two third-place awards across four conference tracks, with studies covering biodiversity, cultural tourism, health, childcare, entrepreneurship, and agricultural technologies.

Dr. Mark Lloyd G. Dapar and Dr. Noel E. Lagunday won 1st Best Paper in Computing Technology for their study on the geometric morphometrics of the upper pitcher architecture of Nepenthes surigaoensis in Mindanao.

Annie Fritce A. Aballe, Marlene S. Zarate, Michael P. Medina, and Mark Jun A. Rojo earned 1st Best Paper in Cross-Disciplinary in Legal Justice, Human Arts and Architecture for their research on cultural tourism readiness among indigenous tribal communities in Bukidnon.

Pilar V. Domagsang and Donald G. Camatura received 1st Best Paper in Human Development, Health, and Environmental Resilience for their study on health promotion and illness prevention among the Tigwahanon Tribe.

Also in the same track, Teresita H. Borres, Kristy P. Restauro, Iyren D. Neri, Haidee Helena H. Garcia, Charlie A. Mundal, and Rolito G. Eballe received 3rd Best Paper for their research on multigenerational workspaces in Philippine higher education institutions.

Raymond S. Pacaldo, Leanne Aireca P. Tumaroy, and Arjel M. Vallecer earned 2nd Best Paper for their study on strengthening the financial, entrepreneurial, and human-resource capacities of farmer cooperatives and worker’s unions enterprises.

Meanwhile, Vences C. Valleser, Edna A. Aguilar, Eureka Teresa M. Acampo, Ireneo B. Pangga, and Calixto M. Protacio received 3rd Best Paper in Sustainable Engineering Solutions/Renewable Energy and Environmental Technologies for their study on biostimulants and plant growth regulators for cacao production under stress conditions.

The conference, co-hosted by CMU, provided the researchers with opportunities to present their work, exchange knowledge with international and multidisciplinary experts, and explore potential research collaborations.

The achievement was followed by an RDE benchmarking activity conducted by the same CMU delegation at selected state universities and colleges (SUCs) in Region 2 on September 21, 22, and 25.

Led by Vice President for Research and Extension Dr. Alan P. Dargantes, the delegation visited Cagayan State University in Tuguegarao; Isabela State University–Ilagan Campus; Isabela State University–Echague Main Campus; and Nueva Vizcaya State University–Bayombong Main Campus.

The benchmarking focused on RDE programs, management systems, research and publication practices, technology development and commercialization, research center operations, and the integration of Gender and Development (GAD).

The activity enabled the delegation to exchange experiences with counterpart institutions and gain insights into practices that may further strengthen CMU’s RDE programs, policies, research services, and institutional systems.

The benchmarking also complemented the delegation’s participation in ICSS-ESHET 2026, turning the visit into an opportunity not only to showcase CMU research but also to learn from the RDE practices of fellow higher education institutions.

University President Dr. Rolito G. Eballe congratulated the researchers and members of the delegation for their achievements and the recognition received at the international conference, commending their contributions to advancing the University’s research agenda during his weekly University Update at the University Convention Center.

University officials, vice presidents, deans, directors, unit heads, faculty, and staff participated in the activity, responding to the Civil Service Commission Regional Office X’s call for government agencies to conduct the commitment-wall signing. 

With this year’s theme, “Bawat Kawani, Lingkod Bayani: Puso, Dangal at Galing Para sa Bayan,” the activity emphasized the role of every government employee in advancing public service, regardless of position or designation. 

In his message, CMU President Dr. Rolito G. Eballe said the signing represents a commitment to “Puso sa Serbisyo, Dangal sa Tungkulin, at Galing sa Paglilingkod”—serving with heart, performing duties with integrity, and striving for excellence. 

Dr. Eballe underscored that placing one’s name on the wall signifies responsibility not only to fellow employees but also to the people served by the University. He also highlighted the collective contribution of faculty, researchers, administrative personnel, support staff, and workers in advancing the University and its services to students and communities. 

He further stressed that the commitment should extend beyond the signing and be reflected in employees’ daily work, particularly in upholding compassion, integrity, accountability, and excellence as public servants.

Representing CMU was Dr. Angela Grace Toledo-Bruno, a faculty member of the College of Forestry and Environmental Science, Director of the Office of External Grants, and Vice-President of the Philippine Network of Educators on Environment (PNEE). Dr. Toledo-Bruno joined delegates from Malaysia, India, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, and the Philippines to discuss sustainable development strategies.

Out of 95 regional submissions, Dr. Toledo-Bruno’s research paper, “Sustainability of Rice Farming amidst Ricefield Conversion in the Top Rice Producing Cities of Bukidnon, Mindanao, Philippines,” was selected by the Scientific Paper Review Committee for presentation. Her work highlights practical approaches to food security, ecological literacy, and land management.

Beyond academic sessions, the Philippine delegation met with USM’s Pejabat Kelestarian Universiti (University Sustainability Office) to explore green campus initiatives, observing USM’s campus-wide single-use plastic ban and widespread solar panel installations. PNEE plans to incorporate these strategies into its Dark Green School initiative through virtual knowledge-sharing sessions featuring CMU, Cavite State University, and Central Luzon State University.

Reflecting on the experience, Dr. Toledo-Bruno emphasized the value of learning from the different approaches of participating institutions. 

“Attending conferences and similar events are venues for sharing practices and experiences from other institutions. Institutions have different initiatives and programs on ecological literacy and environmental management,” Dr. Toledo-Bruno noted.

She also highlighted the conference as an opportunity to strengthen connections and explore potential partnerships.

“Conferences also allow participants to sustain interactions with other institutions,” Dr. Toledo-Bruno said, noting that her participation provided an opportunity to meet fellow PNEE members and discuss possible areas of partnership. 

The conference concluded with actionable steps for institutional advancement, including publication pathways in USM’s Scopus-indexed journals and deepened cross-border academic partnerships.

The event, themed “Enhancing Japan-Philippines Physics Internationalization,” gathered faculty, researchers, and students for a day of knowledge sharing and partnership building. The activity consisted of two parts.

Part 1 featured a formal round-table discussion focusing on engagement and collaboration between Japan and CMU, with Professors Noboru Sasao and Mamiko Sasao and academic representatives. Part 2 featured talks on “Solid State Nuclear Clocks and the Present Status of Nuclear Fusion,” showcasing Japan’s cutting-edge research in physics, also delivered by the same guests.

In his welcome remarks, Dr. Alnar Detalla, Dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, highlighted CMU’s commitment to advancing scientific research and international cooperation. He emphasized that partnerships like this are vital in nurturing globally competitive scientists and fostering innovation that transcends borders.

The activity is an offshoot of Dr. Michelle Marie S. Villamayor’s long-standing engagement with Japanese partners, which has paved the way for sustained collaboration and academic exchange between CMU and Japan.

The Japanese delegation also introduced the Sakura Exchange Program, a scholarship initiative that promotes student mobility and cultural exchange between Japan and the Philippines. Through this program, CMU students will have opportunities to study and conduct research in Japan, gaining exposure to advanced scientific facilities and diverse academic environments. This was delivered by Dr. Noboru Sasao.

In addition, Dr. Mamiko Sasao presented on Japan-Philippine Relations, underscoring the long-standing friendship and shared vision between the two nations—rooted in mutual respect, educational collaboration, and scientific progress.

In her closing remarks, Dr. Raquelyn J. Dadang, Director of the International Relations Office, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Japanese partners, noting that the collaboration “opens doors to meaningful exchanges, joint research endeavors, and shared initiatives that will strengthen our academic communities.” She affirmed that CMU’s partnership with Japan represents “a commitment to global excellence and a recognition that education thrives when minds and hearts from different nations come together.”

With promising prospects for student mobility and future research collaboration, CMU’s engagement with its Japanese partners stands as a testament to its dedication to internationalization and scientific advancement.
