Central Mindanao University (CMU) continues to solidify its global presence in biodiversity and ecological research with the active participation of its scholars in the 2025 International Ecology School (IES) held at Hustai National Park, Mongolia, from August 4–9, 2025.

Dr. Victor B. Amoroso, University Professor Emeritus of CMU, served as one of the distinguished Resource Speakers, delivering a presentation titled “Harnessing Biodiversity and Ecology Research for Policy on Local Conservation Areas and Ecotourism.” In his talk, Dr. Amoroso underscored the importance of aligning biodiversity and ecological studies with policies that support conservation and sustainable ecotourism.

The event was attended by more than 70 participants from eight countries, viz., China, Taiwan, Mongolia, the Philippines, Vietnam, South Korea, Australia, and Thailand.

Also present at the event was Dr. Gio Vincent Balansag, who won 1st Place and Best Presenter, and Dr. Fulgent Coritico, of the Plant Biology Division, Institute of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences.

Following the Scientific Session, participants were exposed to various activities such as field-based observations, Przewalski’s horse show, vegetation and wildlife surveys at Hustai National Park, a visit to the Chinggis Khaan Museum, and sightseeing at Gorkhi-Terelj National Park. All expenses incurred by Dr. Amoroso were generously covered by the organizers.

The International Ecology School, organized annually by the Korean Long Term Ecological Research (KLTER) Network, provides training for early-career ecologists from the East Asia and Pacific region. It aims to broaden global engagement, foster academic exchange, and strengthen partnerships with institutions abroad. Attendance at the 2025 IES builds networks that support research collaboration and capacity-building in biodiversity and conservation science.[Iyren D. Neri with Information from CEBREM]
