Dr. Vences Cuyno Valleser, a faculty member of the Department of Horticulture and Research Coordinator of the College of Agriculture at Central Mindanao University (CMU), earned the Session’s Best Presentation Award during the 5th International Conference on Agroforestry (ICAF) held last year in November at Maejo University, Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Dr. Valleser presented his oral paper, “Effects of Biostimulants and PGRs on the Reproductive Characters of Cacao Under Monocrop and Intercrop Planting Systems.” The paper, featured in the parallel session under the category “Potential Crop Components of Agroforestry Systems,” tackles the challenge of low irradiance stress in cacao cultivated under a coconut intercropping system. The study demonstrated the effectiveness of biostimulants and plant growth regulators (PGRs) in mitigating this issue and improving the reproductive performance of cacao plants.
During the Closing and Awarding Ceremony, Dr. Valleser was recognized with the Session’s Best Presentation Award, a testament to the quality and impact of his research.
The International Conference on Agroforestry is a biennial event organized by the Southeast Asian Network for Agroforestry Education (SEANAFE), which comprises 81 universities involved in agroforestry education, research, and development in Southeast Asia. According to SEANAFE Executive Director Prof. Dr. Wilfredo M. Carandang, the conference provides a platform for sharing innovative research findings, fostering international collaborations, and advancing agroforestry education.
Meanwhile, Dr. Valleser explored Maejo University’s instruction, research, extension, and production hubs. One of the highlights of his visit was the university’s research facility on cannabis for medicinal purposes, which captivated the attention of ICAF participants. Dr. Valleser also participated in a field visit to a sustainable community-based agroforestry farming village supported by Maejo University, further enriching his perspective on agroforestry practices.
Dr. Valleser’s conference participation and his exposure to international research facilities have broadened his understanding of current agricultural and ecosystem challenges. His accomplishments reflect the unwavering support of the CMU administration and the Department of Science and Technology’s Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program (DOST-ASTHRDP).
CMU’s active engagement exemplifies its commitment to research excellence and its proactive role in addressing critical issues in agriculture and agroforestry systems globally. This milestone also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 2 (Zero Hunger), Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), Goal 13 (Climate Action), and Goal 15 (Life on Land), reflecting the university’s dedication to promoting sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation.
