Showcasing Central Mindanao University’s (CMU) academic and research excellence, two students from the College of Education represented the Philippines at the International Academic Forum (IAFOR) 2025, held at the Toshi Center Hotel in Tokyo, Japan, from November 23 to 28, 2025.

Mr. Marjohn N. Esguerra, an undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English, presented his study titled “Brain Rot or Brain Boost? Short-Form Educational Videos on Enhancing Language Learning Among English Majors” during the International Undergraduate Research Symposium (IURS) on November 25.
Esguerra’s research explored the use of short-form video platforms such as TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Facebook Reels in enhancing vocabulary development, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency. His findings revealed that, when used intentionally, these platforms can serve as effective learning tools, while also highlighting potential risks such as distraction and cognitive overload.

Meanwhile, Ms. Kris Oshin B. Lagare, a PhD student in Language Education–English, represented CMU at the Asian Conference on Education (ACE) through an oral presentation of her research titled “Exploring Teachers’ Views on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Integration: Basis for Policy Making” on November 27. Her study examined teachers’ perceptions of AI integration in classrooms, their concerns regarding the use of AI tools, and their recommended policies to guide successful implementation in schools.
Moreover, Lagare was recognized as an IAFOR Scholarship Award Recipient in acknowledgment of her outstanding research contributions. Both students were mentored by Dr. Maria Vivienne Segumpan-Salon, EdD, who supervised their research and supported their preparation for the IAFOR conference.
During the event, the CMU delegates engaged with scholars from around the world, exchanging ideas and sharing Filipino perspectives on education, technology, and leadership. IAFOR is a global academic organization that brings together researchers and practitioners across disciplines to address pressing issues in society and education.
The conference also featured thematic clusters on Technology and Artificial Intelligence, Humanity and Human Intelligence, Global Citizenship and Education for Peace, and Leadership, providing a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration.
Their participation underscores CMU’s commitment to fostering a strong research culture and providing students with meaningful international exposure. By presenting their work on the global stage, Mr. Esguerra and Ms. Lagare reaffirm CMU’s dedication to excellence, innovation, and the development of globally competent educators and researchers.
