What began as an evening of nostalgia and camaraderie during Central Mindanao University’s 115th Grand Alumni Homecoming on September 19, 2025, at the CMU@115 Grand Alumni Night, turned into a life-changing moment for Dr. Karen Debbie J. Cosrojas of Batch 2009.

Cosrojas, an alumna of the College of Agriculture, was named the winner of the event’s grand prize, a fully furnished ₱2.5-million house and lot located in Criswen Homes Subdivision, Pal-ing, Patpat, Malaybalay City.
The property spans 41.70 square meters and includes private parking, a front yard ideal for gatherings, cozy living and dining areas, two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a fully equipped kitchen. This grand prize was made possible through the collective generosity of CMU alumni from the College of Engineering, Batch 1999.
“All I can say is it was God’s grace. My prayer that night was simply, Lord, if it is Your will, let it be done,” Cosrojas said.
She admitted she had hoped to win but never expected her name would be called. When the motorcycle prize went to someone from her college, she thought her chances were over.
Her mixed emotions intensified when the host mentioned “2009” and then “teacher.” “My heart started racing [when I heard my name]. I felt nervous and deeply emotional. Climbing the stage, I was in tears and still trying to take it all in. It was a moment I’ll never forget,” she recalled.
Cosrojas also credited her housemate, Mhy, who prayed she would win. “In the end, it is all His. Praise be to God,” she added.
A proud graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in Agricultural Economics, Cosrojas serves as a faculty member at CMU’s College of Agriculture, making her victory even more meaningful as she continues to give back to her alma mater. Her story of success and service found a tangible reward in the form of a new home, which also carried the mark of alumni generosity.

Meanwhile, COE alumnus and Batch 1999 representative, Engr. Rehum Sumaylo Lopez reminded fellow graduates of their role in supporting the university during his special message and the presentation of projects.
“Before, we were the ones being fenced in at CMU for our safety, discipline, and growth. Now, it is our turn to build the fence and protect the next generation,” he said, as Batch 1999 pledged to fund a multipurpose building and contribute to CMU’s Fencing Project.
The budget for the CMU Fencing Project was primarily sourced from the ₱1,300 registration fees contributed by alumni. To ensure the project’s successful completion, an additional donation will be provided by the COE Batch 1999.

CMU President Dr. Rolito G. Eballe also expressed gratitude for the community’s generosity. “To everyone who participated, thank you for your unwavering support for the programs and projects of Central Mindanao University,” he said in his closing remarks.
The event also brought cheers for other major winners who received prizes such as a Honda Beat motorcycle, a 55-inch Samsung television, a Lenovo laptop, and a fully automatic Panasonic washing machine, among others.
The CMU@115 Grand Alumni Night is the official and strategic event designed to both honor CMU’s 115-year history and actively secure the University’s future.
The night concluded with a vibrant fireworks display at the University Sports Complex, marking the end of a celebration that blended laughter and blessings beyond expectation. [Mary Jane D. Bravo with information from the Office of Alumni Relations and Linkages]
