In celebration of Teachers’ Day, the Central Mindanao University (CMU) held its Annual Faculty Conference with a focus on equipping educators with innovative and technology-driven pedagogical strategies suited for Generation Z learners, as well as strengthening research practices through digital tools.

The conference, held on October 15, 2025, at the University Convention Center, featured a plenary talk delivered by Dr. Angelo Mark P. Walag, Professor VI and Director of the Journal Publication Office at the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP).

In his presentation, Dr. Walag introduced the defining characteristics of Generation Z learners and underscored the need for teaching practices to evolve in response to their unique learning styles. He presented a variety of active, collaborative, authentic, and technology-enhanced approaches designed to engage a generation that values immediate feedback and concise learning materials.
“Innovation begins where our practices no longer meet learner realities,” Dr. Walag said.
He further reminded participants that the effectiveness of any teaching strategy depends on context and learner experience.
“A good teaching strategy puts the learner at the center,” he added.
Dr. Walag also introduced the Innovative Teaching and Educational Technology (iTEC) initiative of USTP, which integrates instructional innovation, research, and community engagement to transform teaching and learning.
Dr. Walag also highlighted that educational innovation is not merely about the integration of technology but about designing learning experiences that align with the needs and behaviors of contemporary students.
“It’s about designing learning that fits who our students are today,” he concluded.

In addition to the plenary session, the Office of Library Services facilitated an orientation on ProQuest Central, an online academic resource providing extensive full-text access to journals, magazines, news sources, trade publications, case studies, and market reports. The session was conducted by Mr. Tofi Maniwang, ProQuest Sales Marketing Executive.
The conference also featured recognition of faculty authors with International Standard Book Number (ISBN) certificates, returning faculty scholars, and faculty members who completed advanced degrees in their personal capacity. The newly-hired faculty members were also introduced. The program was then followed by the Teachers’ Day celebration and the CMU Faculty Association Inc. (CMUFAI) General Assembly.
