Active faculty and staff from the Administration red team were hailed as the overall the champion during the 2018 faculty and staff palaro, with the theme Embracing ASEAN Integration: CMU’s Role in Advancing Inclusive Education,” held at the University Sports Complex, September 12.

The CMU key officials graced the palaro activity. In the opening program, Dr. Maria Luisa R. Soliven, University President, pointed out in her inspirational message that sharing a common goal through sports helps develop loyalty, commitment, and perseverance, promotes cultural values, reduces stress, and gives the experience of “cutting-edge” feeling of pushing to the limits.

According to her, palaro taught individuals how to play as a team which is a very important requirement in the workplace.

“Therefore, it doesn’t matter if a team wins or loses, we should all be proud if we all work as a team because we will all be winners in the end,” Dr. Soliven added.

This years’ faculty and staff palaro composed of 17 different indoor and outdoor events using the single elimination round. This comprised: Basketball, Volleyball, Futsal, Swimming, Track and Field, Lawn Tennis, Badminton, Table Tennis, Basketball Shootout, Chess, Dama, Mario went to Town, Boom Boom Dance, Patintero, Dance Sports, Paper Plane Flying, and Egg Catching.

In an interview with Engr. Nonilon G. Obedencio, Red Team- Administration Coordinator said that previously their team was divided into two – team A and B, while this time they were fused into one team that led them into full force.

“Red team is very organized and had undergone several meetings and practices which I think made our team the over-all champion,” Engr. Obedencio stressed.

Four teams competed in the different events which composed: Red team (Administration); Blue team (Arts and Sciences, Education, Engineering, Veterinary Medicine, and Nursing); Green team (Agriculture, Human Ecology, Forestry and Environmental Science, and Business and Management) and; Yellow team (University Income Generation Program).

Meanwhile, Dr. Maria Luz L. Soriano, faculty member of the Department of Animal Science and University Sports Coordinator said during an interview that she would like to encourage the faculty and staff to participate in the activity continually. She said: “The palaro is also a day to exercise and build a good relationship.”

This was supported by Prof. Procopio B. Galendez Jr., Chairperson of the Department of Physical Education and Palaro Over-all Coordinator who emphasized in an interview that the Administration should issue a memorandum that everybody [faculty and staff] should participate, and that there will be no excuses.

“This palaro is part of team building in the university and friendly competition for fitness and wellness,” Prof. Galendez, Jr. added.

The winners of the different events received gold medals in recognition of their efforts and participation.(WBorja)
