Drawing from his personal experiences, the guest speaker at the opening program of the 9th Research, Development, and Extension (RDE) Week recounted his journey of transforming a dormant piece of land into a thriving farm.
Farm Manager and Operator of Candiisan Diversified Farm Mr. Recarte H. Bacus used his background in research and extension to develop his farm. To maximize the potential of his farm, he diversified his crops and raised livestock. He also pointed out an advantage of crop diversification especially when one of his crops failed.
“If one crop fails, you have backups,” Mr. Bacus said.
Moreover, the farm also innovated various products to manage surplus produce efficiently, preventing wastage and optimizing resources. Recognizing the need for sustainable practices, Mr. Bacus underscored the crucial role of ongoing research and development. This led him to collaborate with different government agencies and non-governmental organizations.
“We must not forget that our journey towards sustainable development is a collective one. It requires collaboration, cooperation, and shared commitment to the greater good,” Mr. Bacus added.
Mr. Bacus also shared that his farm engages in different extension services. He uses different platforms such as social media to reach a wider audience. He also conducts training for fellow farmers, IP communities, and Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs).
“By engaging in extension services, farmers can make informed decisions that will lead to improved yields, higher income, and nurture sustainability,” Mr. Bacus said.
Further, he encouraged everyone, especially agriculture professionals, to be instruments in empowering small farmers.
“Extension initiatives also foster community collaboration, knowledge sharing, and adoption of best practices, contributing significantly to the overall development of agriculture in a sustainable manner,” he added.
