CMU students present research at int’l linguistics conference

Fourth-year Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English students from Central Mindanao University (CMU) showcased their research at the 8th Linguistic Society of the Philippines International Conference, held at West Visayas State University in Iloilo City from April 23 to 25, 2026.

The conference convened global researchers, educators, and practitioners to present studies on Philippine languages, applied linguistics, and language education, fostering academic exchange and collaboration.

Representing CMU’s Language Education Department, Mr. Aeron Dave S. Marcon and Mr. Karl Angelo A. Igcalinos presented their study titled “Genre Analysis of Thesis Abstracts.” Meanwhile, Ms. Andrea A. Danao, Ms. Queenie Jade P. Dilag, and Ms. Cristel Shane N. Doble presented “Lipstick on Manuscript: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Editorial Standards and Conversations in University Publications Abstracts.”

Guided by faculty member Ms. Shiela Mae B. Tejano, the student-researchers actively participated in plenary sessions and scholarly discussions throughout the three-day conference.

Tejano underscored the value of immersing students in real academic environments, noting that, “The real value was watching our student-researchers navigate an academic space: asking questions in plenary sessions, handling critique from fellow researchers and scholars. That’s training we can’t replicate in the classroom.” She added that the experience allowed students to recognize research as “a global conversation, not just a requirement.”

For the student-presenters, the conference also deepened their appreciation of language as a field of study. Mr. Igcalinos reflected that “language should be afforded with the same recognition as with other fields,” emphasizing its role as “a powerful tool that governs our everyday life,” from daily communication to research, law, and literature.

Ms. Dilag echoed this perspective, describing her participation as transformative. “Attending the 8th Linguistic Society of the Philippines International Conference (LSPIC) 2026 was a privilege that changed how I see language,” she said, adding that the experience highlighted how language shapes thought, sustains culture and identity, and influences social relationships. She further noted that exposure to diverse research frameworks strengthened her responsibility as a future educator to use language with “clarity, respect, and purpose.”CMU’s participation highlights the university’s continuing commitment to advancing research and contributing to the development of linguistic studies in the Philippines and beyond.
