CMU celebrates World Wildlife Day

Central Mindanao University joined the global community in celebrating World Wildlife Day through a week-long localized campaign dubbed “Wildlife is Here 2024” organized by Philippine Eagle Foundation Inc. (PEF) in which CMU faculty members served as resource speakers, held at Robinsons Mall, Valencia City.

The university sent participants and resource persons from various colleges, including the Colleges of Arts and Sciences – Institute of Biological Science (CAS-IBS), Forestry and Environmental Science (CFES), and Veterinary Medicine (CVM). The Center for Biodiversity Research and Extension in Mindanao (CEBREM) took the platform to highlight its contributions to discovering and rediscovering wildlife species in Mindanao.

According to Dr. Angela Grace Toledo-Bruno, Professor and Head of the Biodiversity Extension and Public Awareness Unit of CEBREM the focal point of the celebration was the unique biodiversity of Bukidnon, a topic that resonates with CMU’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Dr. Toledo-Bruno enlightened the audience about the significance of forest patches in securing the habitat of wildlife species. Her engaging discussion aimed to raise awareness and emphasize the value of biodiversity conservation.

Moreover, the 2023 NAST Outstanding Young Scientist, Dr. Fulgent Coritico currently leading the Biodiversity Research Unit of CEBREM, presented a paper on wildlife in Mindanao’s mountain ecosystems, contributing valuable insights to biodiversity conservation discourse.

In addition, Dr. Jose Escarlos, Jr., former Dean, and Professor of CMU-CVM highlighted the importance of wildlife within the One Health framework, emphasizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health.

Central Mindanao University’s active participation in the World Wildlife Day 2024 celebration not only showcased its commitment to environmental conservation but also highlighted the collaborative efforts needed to address the challenges facing wildlife and ecosystems.

The campaign was co-presented by Robinsons Valencia and FDC Utilities, Inc., and supported by various government and non-government entities such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Regional Office 10 (DENR 10), the Provincial Government of Bukidnon, Municipal Government of San Fernando, Protected Area Management Boards (PAMBs), Park Superintendent (PASu)s of Mt.
