last Friday, September 17 from 8:00 – 9:30 PM. The event was held through the Physics Meetup (the department’s extension project), partnering with several science-based organizations in the Philippines and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics – Physics Without Frontiers in Trieste, Italy. Attended by almost 500 participants in Zoom and 1,000+ viewers (mostly young Filipinos) on Facebook Live. The session was Prof. Strickland’s first-ever public lecture in the Philippines. Professor Strickland is the third woman awardee in the 120-year history of the Nobel Prize in Physics, joining Marie Curie and Maria Goeppert-Mayer. She won the Nobel Prize in Physics by revolutionizing laser physics, paving the way toward the shortest and most intense laser pulses created by humankind—leading to several applications today in industry and medicine.
