CMU student shares AIMS Scholarship experience in Thailand

A third-year horticulture student from Central Mindanao University (CMU), Alexander James Sayson De Grano, shared his transformative journey as an Asian International Mobility for Students Program (AIMS) scholar at Chiang Mai University, Thailand.

De Grano embarked on the life-changing experience after successfully applying for the prestigious AIMS Scholarship Program. The program, which spanned one semester from June 17 to October 30, offered him the opportunity to study at Chiang Mai University and immerse himself in a new academic and cultural environment.

The AIMS Program, launched in 2010 as a pilot project by SEAMEO RIHED, has since expanded to include nine member countries, including the Philippines. The program offers ten fields of study and has facilitated exchanges for thousands of students across 78 higher education institutions. It promotes academic mobility regional collaboration, and prepares students for global challenges by enhancing cross-cultural skills and regional citizenship.

“My first time traveling outside the Philippines was nerve-wracking, but I knew it was a risk worth taking. Central Mindanao University believed in me, and I was determined to make them proud,” De Grano said.

At Chiang Mai University, De Grano engaged with renowned professors, including Dr. Siwaporn Thumdee, Dr. Jutamas Kumchai, and Dr. Soraya Ruamrungsri, among others, in courses such as vegetable production, floriculture, and agricultural research methodology. His dedication paid off, earning him a perfect grade point average 4.00 for the first time in his academic journey.

“I am deeply grateful for the guidance and support of my professors and classmates in Thailand. Their encouragement and expertise helped me achieve academic success and personal growth,” he added.

Beyond academics, De Grano immersed himself in Thai culture, forming lasting friendships and experiencing the country’s rich traditions, cuisine, and historical landmarks. His newfound connections with classmates and friends made his stay in “The Land of Smiles” even more memorable.

The program aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Quality Education (SDG 4) through access to high-quality education, Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8) via skill development, and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17) by fostering international collaboration. It also promotes Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (SDG 16) by enhancing intercultural understanding and regional integration.

Moreover, De Grano expressed heartfelt gratitude to CMU’s International Relations Office, the College of Agriculture, and the University Administration led by President Rolito G. Eballe for facilitating the opportunity.

“This experience has been a lifetime treasure. I hope future AIMS scholars from CMU will embrace this journey and achieve even greater heights,” De Grano said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Raquelyn Dadang, Director of CMU’s International Relations Office, encouraged agriculture students to seize the exceptional opportunity offered by the AIMS Program. “The Office of International Relations would like to encourage our Agriculture students to grab this rare opportunity and be part of the select few AIMS grantees,” she stated.

Dr. Dadang also highlighted the broader benefits of the program, emphasizing cultural exchange and networking. “For SY 2025-2026, the Commission on Higher Education-International Affairs Service (CHED-IAS) and Central Mindanao University will offer another set of AIMS grantees. Aside from academics, this scholarship will allow learners to immerse themselves in foreign cultures and establish lasting friendships with peers from other nationalities,” she added.

With its vision to be a leading ASEAN university, CMU shares AIMS’ goal of fostering regional integration and global citizenship.
