Central Mindanao University (CMU) student from the College of Veterinary Medicine Mr. Karl Novy P. Torayno, represented the Philippines at the Regional Forum on Innovations to Support Sustainable Livestock Transformation in the Asia and Pacific Region. Held from November 12–14, 2024, in Khon Kaen, Thailand, the event was organized by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and brought together policymakers, technical experts, and youth leaders from across the region.

Chosen from nearly 500 global applicants, Torayno was among the ten selected youth participants, a testament to FAO’s recognition of his potential to contribute meaningfully to the forum’s objectives. Fully sponsored by FAO, his participation highlighted the organization’s commitment to empowering youth voices in addressing challenges in the livestock sector, including climate change, food security, and socio-economic development.
During the forum, Torayno showcased exceptional leadership and expertise by delivering a comprehensive presentation on the Philippine livestock sector. He identified key strengths and challenges, aligning them with global and regional trends. Notably, Torayno actively participated in discussions on gender inclusion, emphasizing the vital role of women in advancing agricultural innovation and livestock sustainability.
Torayno also contributed to dialogues on transboundary animal diseases (TADs) and biosecurity, sharing valuable insights on disease prevention and control strategies. In youth-led roundtable discussions, he collaborated with other participants to address barriers to youth involvement in the livestock sector, proposing actionable recommendations for fostering inclusive and youth-driven solutions.
Key topics explored during the forum included climate-smart livestock practices, innovative feed and nutrition strategies, and the integration of digital technologies for data management.
Torayno’s participation in this prestigious forum underscores the university’s dedication to producing globally competitive professionals equipped with knowledge, leadership, and innovation. His participation highlights CMU’s mission to empower students to become proactive leaders capable of addressing local and global issues.
