CMU named among nation’s eco-friendly schools

Central Mindanao University (CMU) was named one of five national awardees in the 2026 National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools (NSSEFS) at the collegiate level.

University President Dr. Rolito G. Eballe described the recognition as an affirmation of CMU’s role as a catalyst for change, noting that beyond awards, the university remains focused on building a lasting legacy of sustainability.

“More than a recognition, this moment affirms CMU’s evolving role as a catalyst for change—challenging the status quo and redefining what it means to be a sustainable academic community. While awards and plaques may mark milestones, they are only symbols. What truly matters is the legacy we continue to build: a living commitment to stewardship, innovation, and responsibility for generations to come,” Dr. Eballe said.

The award was received by Dr. Eballe together with Dr. Cecilia O. Bucayong, Director of the Office for Environment and Safety Management.

The recognition is given to institutions that demonstrate exemplary commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. As part of the selection process, CMU underwent an on-site validation by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) on March 23, 2026, which assessed its environmental programs, sustainability initiatives, and eco-friendly practices.

Organized by DENR–EMB in collaboration with the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education, the NSSEFS recognizes schools that integrate sustainability into their operations, curriculum, research, extension, and administration. [Johnica Chantal G. Montero]
