CMU remains sole PH representative at ASPNF 2026 in Thailand

Central Mindanao University (CMU) continues to strengthen its reputation on the international scientific stage. Three fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Physics students and a faculty member recently represented the Philippines at the 11th ASEAN School on Plasma and Nuclear Fusion (ASPNF 2026).

Notably, this marks the third consecutive year that CMU participants have served as the country’s exclusive representatives in this prestigious program. The training was  held at the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (TINT) in Ongkharak from January 18 to 23, 2026.

The ASPNF is a premier regional initiative aimed at fostering expertise in plasma and nuclear fusion—fields critical to the future of sustainable energy. This year’s seminar-workshop was highly competitive, selecting only 37 attendees from over 600 applicants across Asia.

The CMU delegation was led by Prof.  Lloyd Allan T. Cabañog, together with three undergraduate students: Ms. Gwyn Berden, Jojie Ann Nemenzo, and Lilian Mae Gumban.

ASPNF 2026 is jointly hosted by the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (TINT) and sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The program offers trainees a unique opportunity to engage with world-class researchers and cutting-edge facilities. A primary highlight of the week is their work with the Thailand Tokamak I (TTI), the only operational tokamak facility in the ASEAN region. This hands-on exposure allows the CMU team to study plasma control and fusion mechanics firsthand.

CMU’s consistent involvement in the ASPNF aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically, SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).

Through this participation, Central Mindanao University reaffirms its commitment to producing globally competitive graduates and advancing the frontiers of clean energy science.
