DENR Partners with the Academe to actualize Mt. Apo Natural Park’s vie for UNESCO Global Geoparks

The Central Mindanao University’s (CMU) Center for Biodiversity Research and Extension in Mindanao (CEBREM) ongoing DOST-GIA funded project “Biodiversity in Selected Mountain Ecosystems of Mindanao for Conservation and Sustainable Development” in collaboration with the University of the Philippines- Los Baños, (UP-LB), National Museum of the Philippines (NMP), Davao Oriental State University (DORSU) and Davao Del Sur State College (DSSC) recently kicked-off its Mt Apo Natural Park leg. The institution endeavors to profile and study the fauna and flora in selected mountain ecosystems in this southern part of the country.

It was conducted through a community presentation in So. Rimpong, Brgy.Binaton, Digos City.

With the attendance of Dr. Victor Amoroso, University Professor Emeritus of CMU and Project Team Leader, Dr. Augie E. Fuentes of DSSC, Dr. Alberto N.Bandiola, PENR Officer and concurrent PASU of MANP and BAE Baby Gerlina Uwok, Tribal Chieftain and Admin Officer Eric Marteja of NCIP XI Provincial Office, the collaboration with our Indigenous Cultural Community or ICCs in Mt Apo has reached laudable levels with the consent and support given by the Unified Bagobo Tagabawa to this Milestone Research Project for the Mt Apo Natural Park.

The composite team from CMU, DENR, and MANP spent several days in the Colan, Sta Cruz trail, culminating on May 5, 2022. The gathering of critical data for the said project will aid the generation of knowledge for MANP’s conservation plans and programs. It will also succor its application for recognition as a UNESCO Global Geo-Park (UGGp), a single unified geographical area that is recognized as having significant global value.
