Central Mindanao University, through the Offices of Research and Extension, conducted the 9th Research, Development, and Extension (RDE) Congress and 36th Annual In-House Review and Evaluation via virtual conferencing on November 5-8, 2024.
This year’s congress featured 112 research and development papers and one poster presentation. These were divided into two main categories: Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources (AANR) and Non-AANR. These submissions included 47 completed research projects, 23 ongoing research projects, 18 completed development projects, 17 ongoing development projects, and seven thesis or dissertation papers.
Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 10 Assistant Regional Director for Technical Services Virgilio M. Fuertes served as the keynote speaker. He emphasized the importance of research addressing real-world challenges, particularly those faced by communities in Northern Mindanao.
“We see the need for community-driven, industry-driven, practical research that empowers our citizens to be both learners and, importantly, innovators, contributing to global knowledge while addressing local challenges,” said Mr. Fuertes.
Furthermore, Mr. Fuertes highlighted CMU’s role in achieving regional development plans and global sustainability goals through research, development, and extension efforts in sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, health, and technology.
Mr. Fuertes then described the congress as a showcase of a regional R&D network, working together to address real-world challenges and empower citizens to stay grounded in local values while becoming globally aware.
Meanwhile, University President Dr. Rolito G. Eballe emphasized in his message the significance of AIHRE in the university’s RDE efforts.
“The annual in-house review and evaluation helps ensure that the university’s research and community engagements are both impactful and aligned with the institutional and societal goals,” said Dr. Eballe.
Research Director Dr. Jupiter V. Casas said in his closing remarks during the closing program that despite challenges, the university will continue to make its RDE efforts relevant and contributory to its stakeholders, especially those living in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs).
At the conclusion of the event, 25 papers were recognized. The congress was themed “Global Citizenship through Life Learning and Innovation.”
