Central Mindanao University (CMU), through the College of Human Ecology (CHE), recently advanced its global engagement efforts in the hospitality industry by conducting a series of hotel visits and formalizing a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with The Slate Hotel in Phuket, Thailand on October 27-30.
The CMU delegation, led by the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Jose S. Valmorida, and CHE Dean, Dr. Rubie A. Arroyo, aims to strengthen the University’s international linkages and enhance experiential learning opportunities and align the CMU BSHM program with international standards while supporting key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The delegation conducted ocular visits and assessments at The Slate Hotel, Four Points by Sheraton, Ayodhaya Palace Krabi Beach Resort, and JW Marriott Hotel. These visits provided essential insights that will guide and enrich CMU’s hospitality curriculum. Dr. Arroyo noted that observing best practices in these internationally recognized hotels revealed the industry’s preference for a minimum six-month internship period, prompting consideration for CMU’s curriculum to ensure that it aligns with global standards.
Moreover, the delegation conducted thorough evaluations of student accommodation options to ensure that they meet CMU’s safety and quality requirements. This assessment guarantees that BSHM students participating in internships in Phuket will have access to secure and culturally adaptable living environments, fostering a supportive learning atmosphere.
Dr. Valmorida and Dr. Arroyo also explored potential academic collaborations with Thai hospitality providers, which could further enhance CMU students’ educational experiences. These interactions highlighted the value of cultural competency for students entering global industries, in line with CMU’s strategic goal of cultivating international perspectives among its graduates.
The BSHM three-month internship program in Phuket is set to begin in the second semester of 2025, with interviews and preparatory steps still ongoing for 22 students qualified in the opportunity. This initiative underscores CMU’s commitment to elevating academic standards and expanding practical learning opportunities for its students.
This partnership advances SDG 4: Quality Education by aligning CMU’s hospitality curriculum with global standards, enabling students to meet industry demands. By ensuring fair compensation and safe accommodations, the program also contributes to SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. Additionally, by fostering collaboration with international institutions, this initiative supports SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals (Iyren Dalipe Neri with information from Dr. Rubie A.
