Students of Central Mindanao University (CMU) expressed their appreciation for the free breakfast initiative of CMU Alumni Association Inc. (CMUAAI), saying the program provided support during the final examination week.

Through the Brain Boost: Nourish to Pass Program, students were served arroz caldo and bread on May 4-8, 2026 at the Fulbright Garden.

Several students shared that the initiative greatly helped those who struggle to afford meals, especially breakfast, during busy academic periods.

Jesse June L. Casulla, a second-year Bachelor of Science in Mathematics student said that the program was helpful for students who come to school without food.

“Nice siya nga makatabang siya, especially sa students nga need og pamahaw. Especially sad kay ako pud nga walay kaon. Makatabang gyud siya,” Casulla said.

(It’s nice because it helps, especially students who need breakfast. Like me, I have not eaten yet, so it really helps.)

Third year BS Home Economics Shandy Fuentes highlighted how the initiative became especially beneficial during examinations, when many students face financial constraints. She also noted that the warm meals helped energize them and mentally prepare them for their exams.

“Nindot siya nga program kay makatabang siya sa students. Especially ting exam, naay uban tight og budget. Nindot pud siya maka-boost gyud siya, nindot ang arrozcaldo maka-boost gyud siya ug ma-ready ang mind sa students na mag-answer og exam,” Fuentes shared.

(It’s a good program because it helps students. Especially during exams, some students have a tight budget. It also gives a boost—the arroz caldo really helps boost and prepare the students’ minds to answer their exams.)

Michol John Mark B. Galon, a third-year BS Chemistry student, also pointed out that college life often leads them to neglect proper sleep and meals because of academic demands. Because of this, they appreciated the concern shown by the organizers toward students’ health and well-being.

“Personally, tsada siya nga initiative kay bal-an baya sa college kay kanang medyo pabaya na mi sa amoang tulog ug kaon. So, tsada kaayo siya na makatabang after exam para sa amoa pud kay at least makita namo ang effort ninyo sa pag tan-aw sa amoang health ug sa among kulang-kulang like kaning kaon,” Galon shared.

(Personally, it’s a great initiative because in college, we tend to neglect our sleep and meals. So, this really helps us, especially after exams. At least we can see your effort in looking after our health and helping with the things we lack, like food.)

The initiative entitled Brain Boost: Nourish to Pass Program began in the first semester of the previous academic year. Designed to support students during their final examinations, the program aims to empower them by addressing one of their most fundamental needs and recognizing the toll academic pressure can take on their well-being.

Apart from the CMU Alumni, similar initiatives were also organized by the Office of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS) and CMU – Operations Management Student Association (OMSA).

The program was made possible through the collective efforts of the CMU Office of the Alumni Relations and Linkages, CMU SAAS Alumni and Residents, CMU Beta Sigma Fraternity – Sigma Beta Sorority, Biotech Farms Inc., Philfresh MEATS Corporation, Louella’s Plant Nursery, Crisis Intervention Team – Central Mindanao University, CMU Psychology Student Circle, AAP III Poultry Farms, Pete & Millie Amomonpon, Bukidnon Dairy – Philippine Carabao Center at CMU, Maramag Tablea, Engr. & Mrs. Rey Peter B. Gillie, Simborio Family, and San Miguel Foods Corporation.

Mr. Wilmer J. Oriendo Jr. was accepted into the Short-Term Training Program under the International Educational Trip of Hokkaido University and is undergoing training from April 23 to June 22, 2026, at the Laboratory of Nanomaterial Science under the supervision of Prof. Kuniharu Takei.

The host laboratory, under the Faculty of Information Science and Technology, is known for its research on flexible sensors, wearable electronic devices, and electronic skin technologies for biomedical applications. The laboratory integrates nanomaterials, embedded systems, and machine learning to develop intelligent and adaptive technologies for real-world applications.

As part of the training, Mr. Oriendo is being exposed to advanced laboratory practices and interdisciplinary research methods. His activities include observing micro- and nanoscale fabrication processes, participating in laboratory meetings and research discussions, and assisting in the development and testing of flexible sensor technologies such as pH sensors.

The training also allows him to gain experience in sensor integration, embedded platforms, and intelligent data processing systems used for real-time analysis and decision-making.

Mr. Oriendo said the program closely aligns with his research interests in Internet of Things (IoT)-based energy monitoring systems and smart metering technologies.

“My training at Hokkaido University is still ongoing, but it has already become a meaningful chapter in my life,” Mr. Oriendo said. “It’s not just about gaining experience—it’s about discovering new perspectives, both professionally and personally.”

He added that the experience has helped him better understand advanced engineering applications and exposed him to Japan’s research culture, which emphasizes discipline, precision, and systematic experimentation.

Moreover, Mr. Oriendo said the program has strengthened his adaptability, independence, and cross-cultural communication skills through interactions with international researchers and students.

“If given the chance, I would highly encourage other students to take opportunities like this,” he said. “It may feel uncomfortable at first, but that discomfort is where real growth begins.”

Meanwhile, Engr. Kimverly Joy A. Mahinay, faculty member and International Relations College Coordinator of the College of Engineering, said that Mr. Oriendo’s participation also marks the Department of Electrical Engineering’s first student international mobility experience.

Engr. Mahinay, who accompanied and facilitated Oriendo’s travel to Japan during CMU’s official visit to Hokkaido University, said the engagement opened valuable opportunities not only for the student but also for the university. [Iyren Neri with information from Mr. Wilmer J.
The recognition was announced in the foundation’s official posts on April 29 and 30, which celebrated educators and partner institutions across Southern Philippines for their contributions to entrepreneurship education, venture creation, and student empowerment.

CMU was cited as a Top 4 institution in Southern Philippines, recording 385 student ventures created and reaching 1,773 students through the WEN Ignite Program.

Alongside the institutional recognition, six CMU-CBM faculty members were named among the Top 10 Faculty Champions. They are Junry Bacquiled (Top 2), Nicole Grace Sarausa (Top 4), Almarie Esmeralda (Top 6), Johanna Langot (Top 7), Keirwenn Andaya (Top 8), and Leanne Aireca Tumaroy (Top 9).

Collectively, the faculty champions facilitated 74 cohorts, reached 3,310 students, and supported the creation of 704 student ventures under the Wadhwani Entrepreneur (WEN) Program since 2024.

Meanwhile, CBM Dean Daryl Jane A. Caballero expressed pride in the achievement, saying: “Super proud! As expected, our faculty did not take their task casually; they poured their hearts into it. The number of CBM faculty who made it to the Top 10 speaks volumes of their commitment, passion, and excellence.” She added that the accomplishment is deeply fulfilling for the college and university administration, noting that “countless business ideas born out of ordinary coursework across disciplines are now taking shape as promising, impactful ventures and innovations.”

In separate interviews, the top 2 awardee, Mr. Junry Bacquiled said, the recognition affirms the impact of his work beyond the classroom. “I am deeply honored and sincerely grateful to the Wadhwani Foundation for recognizing my work as part of the Top 2 among the Top 10 Faculty Champions of WEN Ignite — Southern Philippines (2023–2026),” he said. Mr. Bacquiled added that the recognition reflects both personal effort and the supportive environment within CMU-CBM, noting that it strengthens his commitment to further improve and create meaningful impact for students and the university community.

The top 4 awardee, Ms. Nicole Grace Sarausa, emphasized that the recognition is a shared achievement. “To be recognized as one of the Top Faculty Champions of WEN Ignite-Southern Philippines (2023–2026) is both an inspiration and a privilege I do not take lightly,” she said. Ms. Sarausa stressed that the distinction reflects the collective efforts of students, colleagues, and the university. “The distinction does not solely belong to me; it belongs to all the students I have helped along the way,” she added.

The Wadhwani Foundation is a global nonprofit organization focused on accelerating economic development in emerging economies through entrepreneurship, innovation, small business growth, and skills development. The WEN Ignite Program aims to scale venture creation and job generation across partner institutions.

CMU formalized its partnership with the foundation through a Memorandum of Agreement signed on August 19, 2024, facilitated by the Office of International Relations and initiated by CBM Dean Daryl Jane A. Caballero.

Selection of the Top 10 Faculty Champions was based on a data-driven evaluation using a Power BI analytics dashboard, with emphasis on venture creation, student reach, and program implementation to ensure objective, transparent, and impact-based recognition. [Iyren Dalipe Neri with information from the College of Business and Management]

The conference convened global researchers, educators, and practitioners to present studies on Philippine languages, applied linguistics, and language education, fostering academic exchange and collaboration.

Representing CMU’s Language Education Department, Mr. Aeron Dave S. Marcon and Mr. Karl Angelo A. Igcalinos presented their study titled “Genre Analysis of Thesis Abstracts.” Meanwhile, Ms. Andrea A. Danao, Ms. Queenie Jade P. Dilag, and Ms. Cristel Shane N. Doble presented “Lipstick on Manuscript: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Editorial Standards and Conversations in University Publications Abstracts.”

Guided by faculty member Ms. Shiela Mae B. Tejano, the student-researchers actively participated in plenary sessions and scholarly discussions throughout the three-day conference.

Tejano underscored the value of immersing students in real academic environments, noting that, “The real value was watching our student-researchers navigate an academic space: asking questions in plenary sessions, handling critique from fellow researchers and scholars. That’s training we can’t replicate in the classroom.” She added that the experience allowed students to recognize research as “a global conversation, not just a requirement.”

For the student-presenters, the conference also deepened their appreciation of language as a field of study. Mr. Igcalinos reflected that “language should be afforded with the same recognition as with other fields,” emphasizing its role as “a powerful tool that governs our everyday life,” from daily communication to research, law, and literature.

Ms. Dilag echoed this perspective, describing her participation as transformative. “Attending the 8th Linguistic Society of the Philippines International Conference (LSPIC) 2026 was a privilege that changed how I see language,” she said, adding that the experience highlighted how language shapes thought, sustains culture and identity, and influences social relationships. She further noted that exposure to diverse research frameworks strengthened her responsibility as a future educator to use language with “clarity, respect, and purpose.”CMU’s participation highlights the university’s continuing commitment to advancing research and contributing to the development of linguistic studies in the Philippines and beyond. [Iyren Dalipe Neri with information from Ms. Shiela Mae B.

Dr. Domingo P. Lodevico, a faculty member of the Department of Food Science under the College of Human Ecology, attended the “Short Course on Agri-Food Sector – Nature × ScienceTech Innovation: Co-creating Sustainable Agro-Food Industry and Climate Solutions for a Resilient Planet.”

The program included an online component from April 6–12, followed by on-site sessions from April 13–18 hosted at the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FAT-UGM). Around 100 participants from 15 countries joined, exchanging knowledge on sustainable agriculture, climate adaptation, and agri-food system resilience.

The program featured 14 expert speakers discussing advancements in precision agriculture, smart farming technologies, and innovative food systems. Participants engaged in lectures, discussions, and field visits, including exposure to chocolate processing, melon production, dairy processing, and emerging technologies such as 3D food printing. The course concluded with group presentations and a recognition ceremony.

Dr. Lodevico described the experience as both enriching and professionally valuable, citing the program’s interdisciplinary nature. “As a faculty member in the Department of Food Science, I gained significant insights from Universitas Gadjah Mada’s practical experience in the development and commercialization of processed food products, particularly in translating research outputs into viable applications,” he said.

He added that, as a doctoral student in Horticulture at CMU, the course deepened his understanding of precision and smart agriculture, including their underlying technologies and sustainability implications. “The knowledge acquired has strengthened my capacity to critically evaluate and potentially integrate these approaches into future research, instruction, and extension initiatives,” he noted. The participation is expected to support CMU’s initiatives in precision agriculture and evidence-based innovation, as well as strengthen its academic and extension programs. A re-echo activity is scheduled within the year to share insights from the training with the university community. [Iyren Dalipe Neri with information from Dr. Domingo P.
Titled “USA-Israel War on Iran: Perspectives in Political, Governmental, Media, & International Studies,” the seminar gathered scholars, faculty members, and students from Southeast Asia and other regions to discuss the issue through multidisciplinary and Global South lenses.

The activity aimed to provide a platform for academic dialogue on how geopolitical conflicts influence not only the Middle East but also other regions, including Southeast Asia, particularly in terms of economic stability, energy markets, and international relations.

In his opening message, UMY Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Dean Prof. Al-Hamdi emphasized the importance of inclusive academic discussions across borders, describing the seminar as a space for learning among diverse academic communities. Meanwhile, CMU College of Arts and Sciences Dean Dr. Eva N. Mendoza encouraged participants to actively engage, highlighting the role of Southeast Asian scholars in contributing to global discourse.

A series of presentations followed, each tackling the issue from different academic perspectives.

Prof. Anna Girlee V. Visayan discussed the institutional impacts of geopolitical instability, particularly on higher education. She noted that global conflicts can affect universities through funding uncertainties, disrupted international partnerships, and reduced student mobility, and emphasized the need for proactive risk management strategies.

Dr. Ahmad Sahide provided a geopolitical analysis of the conflict, focusing on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Israel’s security concerns, and the role of US sanctions. He explained that the situation reflects a security dilemma in international relations, where actions taken by one state to increase security may heighten tensions with others.

Dr. Senja Yustitia examined media coverage of the conflict, pointing out challenges in practicing peace journalism amid the rise of digital media and misinformation. She underscored the importance of improving media literacy to address biased and sensationalized reporting.

Meanwhile, Ms. Jornie D. Lumintao presented findings on Filipino students’ awareness of the conflict, revealing that while students are generally informed, their understanding is often shaped by media exposure rather than in-depth analysis. She emphasized the need to strengthen political education and critical thinking in higher education curricula.

The seminar also highlighted the importance of Global South perspectives in understanding international conflicts, noting that these viewpoints provide insights into how developing countries experience and interpret global events.

Organizers said the seminar demonstrated the value of cross-border academic collaboration in addressing complex global issues and promoting informed discussions among students and scholars. [Information from Jan Peter Luiz L.
